If there's anyone who's mastered the art of city style it's Joiee Thorpe, Fashion Editor of Essence Magazine and our current lady crush. She's just...cool. An all-encompassing kind of cool that makes you want to wear bright colors and upgrade your jewelry game because she does it so well. The born and raised Brooklynite started her career with an internship in fashion PR at Marie Claire Magazine and quickly realized she wanted to be a fashion editor. "I had dreams of travel and styling that I couldn't shake, so I went after it!" Joiee was kind enough to let us crash her lovely Crown Heights home to chat work life, day-to-night dressing, and check out that insane extra room she calls a closet.
I'd love to focus on tips for day to night dressing for our #girlonthego.
Stylist tips, hmmm...First things first, wear things that compliment your body and who you are. Clothing and accessories that may look good on someone else may not look good on you and vice-versa. Also save your really good pieces because trends always resurface.
What's the best part of your job, and the most challenging?
The best part of my job is when I style a model or celeb and they are really feeling what they are wearing!!! I love when women know they look good, it brings out their inner diva immediately. I also love looking at really good collections from designers...sometimes the artistry is so good that it could literally bring a tear to my eye...no joke! I think of Fashion as a type of art in many ways.
Loaded question, hahaha. I can't really predict my fashion future at the moment, especially because of how social media has changed the world. I do know that I am ultra-creative. I love styling and what I do, even if it is constantly transitioning. Change and growth will somehow keep me on the right path. For example, I never thought I would be doing fashion segments as a television personality and now it's a part of my job! Never would have predicted that, tee-hee!
I love trends! They make fashion exciting. I am not saying live your life according to what Pantone labels the color of the season but you can get excited that glitter shoes are having a moment or that baggy jeans are back. Look I have been rocking my mom jeans a bunch lately but yes, I will still pull out my sexy skinnies.
I am all about kitten heels this fall for some reason.
I wear knee boots with flowy dresses!
